MECER’S FOCUS IN EDUCATION

Mecer, manufacturers and distributors of the largest selling PC brand in SA for the past 12 years, in line with the Proudly South African pledge not only meets all requirements necessary for membership of the PSA initiative but also conforms to all local and international quality standards as well as Microsofts Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) requirements.

A Mecer network was sponsored for the Internet cafe at the conference

Mecer’s experience and understanding of Education has been demonstrated in various education projects throughout South Africa, and coupled with its unequalled value added reseller base Mecer is able to deliver turnkey educational solutions throughout South Africa.

As part of its social responsibility Mecer has made a number of investments in Education over the last couple of years to assist in the upliftment of the historically disadvantaged through more effective schooling. These investments have been made in three basic area’s:

1.      School / Building refurbishment

2.      ICT Lab installations

3.      Development

A. School / Building refurbishment

Mecer funded the refurbishment of 2 schools in Mpumalanga, amounting to an investment of R750,000.00. These schools are:

i.       Sibongile Primary School

1.      Renovations have taken place

2.      An Administration block for the headmaster and staff has been built

3.      An additional 5 classrooms have been built

4.      Electricity and water have been provided

5.      The property has been fenced in

ii.      Thlakanang Secondary School

1.      A library has been built

2.      A science laboratory has been built

3.      Electricity has been provided

4.      The whole school has been renovated

 

In addition to the above Mecer adopted the Allanridge Combined School in Midrand and is working closely with the school to assist with its academic and cultural needs. Over R100,000.00 has been spent at this township school on:

  • Science equipment for the advancement of physical science studies.

  • Computers and accessories have been provided for the efficient running of the schools administrative functions.

B. ICT Lab installations

Mecer has donated fully operational computer laboratories to 7 schools in South Africa during the last year, with a total donation value of at least R 2,8 Million Rands. These computer labs consists of:

iii.      Computer Hardware

iv.      Computer Security Solutions

v.      Computer Software

vi.      Network installations and Set-up

vii.      Web Page design and maintenance

viii.      Maintenance and Support services

 

These schools are:

i.      Job Maseko Primary School – Kwa-Thema Gauteng

ii.      Westbury Primary School – Gauteng

iii.      Mablomomg Intermediate School – Gauteng

iv.      Hoërskool Oosterlig – Gauteng

v.      Laerskool Uniefees – Gauteng

vi.      Vanguard Primary School – Western Cape

vii.      Primary School – Ulundi KZN

                       

C. Development

Mecer co-funded the development of the Inter-ED project. Inter-ED is an educational courseware system for the foundation phase, grades R, 1, 2 and 3, which is an Outcomes Based Educational system in line with the Revised Curriculum for South Africa, and is available in the 11 official languages affording opportunity to all learners in the foundation phase to receive their tuition in the mother tongue or in a language of their choice, as per government language policy, effective January 2002.

Mecer’s investment in the development of the Inter-ED system to date is in excess of R8 Million Rand.
