Seven Minutes of Fame

I am a hacker, says Komen

By Lufuno Mutele

Acacia WebTimes Reporter

JORIS Komen pauses halfway through his seven-minute presentation and declares: “I am a hacker”.

As executive director of Schoolnet Namibia, Komen is constantly in battle with the harsh realities of lack of resources in his quest to make information and communication technologies (ICTs) accessible to young people in Namibia.

Komen lobbies for an open source platform that makes access to the internet cheaper and simpler. He talks about the need for telecommunications companies to join in the effort to improve access to ICTs.

He identifies privatisation of telecommunications and software development monopolies as the main threats to the ideal of making ICTs available for development of impoverished communities.
