Networking Communities

What we know about networking in telecentres in Africa is that the cost is high, the telecommunication links are poor, and the challenge of achieving full sustainability is enormous. Community networking is a challenge requiring the development of organisational capacities and community management skills, and of getting telcos to recognise that these community projects are significant corporate clients that require businesslike services. Beyond this our challenge is to find cheaper, faster ways to connect these facilities within the regulatory and operator frameworks in the countries, to to challenge these.

Go to the workshop session.

Some relevant projects are listed below. Go to the Project Websites page for links to their web pages (where available).

  • Namaacha and Manica (two pilot telecentres in Mozambique with one website)

  • Underserviced area licences

  • Universal Service Agency (did not participate in workshop).
