SchoolNet
Mozambique (Internet para as Escolas) is a demonstration of how the initial
success demonstrated in the first three years of operation under the Centre
for Informatics at the University of Edouardo Modlane, has been adopted by
the Ministry of Education. This validates the outcomes of the pilot research
achieved in a few Maputo Schools and some provincial capital schools. The
most critical finding, however, was the high cost of Internet access. In
some cases the provincial capital schools, that did not have access to local
POPs, were running up a telephone dial-up bill far larger than the school's
budget could maintain.
In August, TDM, (Telecomunicacies de Mocambique), the national fixed line
operator, has committed to providing two years of free Internet access to
all of the Schoolnet Schools. This, according to the national coordinator,
Kauxique Managalal, who attended the Acacia researchers workshop, was one of
the high points of the programme. The other high point is that the Acacia
funding for the project will also commence a computer maintenance
programme, linked to curriculum development, and find ways of sustaining the
activity and report the findings as "lessons learned" relevant to all
telecentre/schoolnet projects. |
