| Phases
of the project
The first phase achieved
a high level of success through mobilising largely micro-enterprises in the
formal and informal sectors of township tourism in the Western Cape called
Sonke Cape Route Forum. There is an involvement of the University of the
Western Cape's fledgling research unit of the Department of Information
Systems that allows for participation in the African Dream website that
promotes main-stream and off-the-beaten track tourism from Cape to Cairo.
The second phase aims to
quantify the impact that internet exposure has had on tourism entrepreneurs
in the Sonke Cape Route Forum. It aims to go further to research their
information and communication needs and will seek to find at least three
technical solutions that could further strengthen the Forum and this sector
of tourism in Cape Town.
Alongside these
solutions will be ongoing capacity-building in the Forum to encourage the
use of appropriate information and communication technologies relevant to
strengthening the goals of the sector. Phase 2 will also document case
studies and provide some comparative literature findings from similar
community and cultural tourism sectors in South Africa. |
