Wireless telehealth in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

Chris Morris is the ICT for Rural Development Consultant for the CSIR in South Africa. A professional engineer, he has been in the project management of multi-million rand, multi-disciplinary projects including:

  • Lubisi Eastern Cape funded by the IDRC

  • Manguzi Kwa Zulu Natal funded by the CSIR

  • Tsilitwa Eastern Cape funded by DACST

  • Pomfret, Itsoseng, Vryburg, North West funded by DACST

  • E Cape cost-effective traditional construction Micro-Projects

Business area focused on the use of innovative ICTs in support of communities in rural areas for distance education, telemedicine, SMME’s and agricultural information. In addition to ensuring business objectives, my key responsibilities are to liase with donors, community leaders, government and the private sector in order to ensure full participation and integration of our projects with Provincial and National plans. This requires managing a consortia of diverse skills in order to provide an integrated approach to rural development.

"Our aim is to enable local economic development through the use of ICTs in order to support ongoing sustainability of the community centre," he says.

Key clients and stakeholders: GCIS, Department of Communications, Department of Health, E Cape and NW Provincial Government, Eskom, World Bank, ISSC, IDRC, British Commission, DFID.
