Liberation technologies for the people
A Jakarta-based
expert on low-cost and relevant ICTs for the developing world,
Dr Onno W Purbo [onno@indo.net.id]
is an independent IT writer, a former lecturer at the Bandung Institute of
Technology (ITB) and a former Indonesian civil servant.
Connecting to the
Internet using a simple aluminum antenna ("antenna in a can") and a wireless
network card (WiFi) could be the best way to narrow the digital divide and
bolster economic development, he says. He is also a strong proponent of
"copyleft", believing that information should be made freely available via
the Web.
