(September 2002, AITEC)
- The SAT-3/WASC/SAFE submarine cables linking Africa to Europe and Asia
were launched in Dakar in May 2002. Now, its 20 Gbps capacity between
Europe, West Africa and South Africa is already fully subscribed and is to
be doubled within a year.
The
Sat-3/ West African Submarine Cable (WASC) and South Africa – Far East
(SAFE) system spans a total of 28,000 km and connects the countries of
Portugal, Spain (Canary Islands), Senegal, Ghana, Benin, Cote D’Ivoire,
Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Angola, South Africa, France (Reunion),
Mauritius, India and Malaysia. It is split into two segments: Sat-3/ WASC,
which runs from South Africa to Portugal via landing points on West
African countries; and SAFE which runs from South Africa to Malaysia.
Sat-3/WASC has an ultimate capacity of 120 Gbps. Initially, it has a
capacity of 20 Gbps, but it is in the process of being upgraded to 40 Gbps
– a capacity which should become available by June 2003. The total system
cost amounts to more than $650 million. For further information see
